What’s good?
These cameras allow you to take 3D panorama pictures and have the option to use different lenses.

What’s bad?
The design looks a little out of proportion, since the body is very slim and the optics are very bulky. The body has no built in flash, but one can be attached at the top.

Summary
A very slim body and excellent picture quality, these cameras offer a revolutionary 3D mode picture. It offers almost the same functionality of a mirror reflex camera, in a mirror-less and an exceptionally compact design.

Although Sony presented these cameras at the beginning of this year, showing prototypes of these new models with interchangeable lenses; it wasn’t until the last weeks that the first operating models were found on the shelves.

The NEX-3 and NEX-5 offer a 14 megapixel resolution and are very similar in design and functionality, with the only difference being the video recording function of the NEX-5. Along with the cameras, Sony has also launched 3 different lenses for these two models: a 18-55 mm zoom lens with f3.5-5.6, a 18-200 mm f3.5-5.6 and a 16 f2.8 fish eye angular lens. There is also an adapter for Alpha lenses and an optional optical viewfinder.

A revolutionary mirror-less concept
These cameras were presented in Europe during a press conference and it was here where the first operative models were shown. The new system of exchangeable lenses with a mirror-less design is such a new concept that until today, it hasn’t received an official name yet.

They are sold in two different kits: one with the 18-55 mm optically stabilized lens and another with a 16 mm f/2.8 lens without optical stabilization. The launch prices for these cameras are very competitive and are in the range of 500 to 700 dollars, depending on the chosen model and optics. The NEX-3 is around 100 dollars cheaper than the NEX-5.

Image modes and picture quality
The camera has an APS-C CMOS sensor with a cut factor of 1.5x and 14 megapixels resolution. The NEX-5 can also record high definition video.

The same presets found in the other Sony SLR cameras are found in these two models. They control contrast and color reproduction, image saturation and sharpness. Contrast and sharpness can also be adjusted manually and saturation adjustment can also be changed in all six Creative Styles, except when shooting in black and white. Unfortunately, these cameras tend to over-saturate colors, but this saturation can be manually corrected in the navigation menu. For example, in the Portrait mode, it over-saturates the skin color by about 110%, causing the persons to have an unnatural looking blush on their faces.

Body design
It is so slim that in the official released product pictures; the lens looks higher than the body of the camera. These cameras have a flip-out 3” monitor with 960,000 pixels resolution.

It measures 4 3/8 x 2 3/8 x 1 9/16 inches and weighs 8.1 ounces, making it the smallest camera with interchangeable lenses on the market, and with the 16 mm lens attached, it can fit easily inside a pocket.

There are not many buttons on the body itself, but most of the functions and settings are in the digital menu, which allows for a cleaner and more minimalist design preferred by many.

Although there is no built in flash in the body, both the NEX-3 and NEX-5 have the option to attach an external flash, provided in the package for both models, in the so called “intelligent cover”. In this same bay, it is possible to attach an optional optic viewfinder, which must be bought separately.

Features
The ease of use is one of the characteristics of these two models, and some of the functions found in the other Sony models are also included here, such as the panoramic mode. This camera allows also for full manual functionality, giving the flexibility found in any SLR camera, and it can also work with RAW format pictures. ISO can be set from 100 to 12,800.

These cameras can take up to 2,7 frames per second thanks to the Bionz processor built in, and under certain conditions can shoot up to 7 frames per second.
