When compared with the Impression, the Samsung Rogue SCH –U960 is slightly bulkier and thicker, although it is a little shorter.  It weighs less than the Impression but feels good in the hand, due in part to the battery cover that is textured to give it a secure grip. The sophisticated colour scheme is an attractive addition to the design.

The AMOLED touch screen display is a striking characteristic, with bright colors, vibrant images and clear text, although it loses some clarity under direct sunlight. The display supports 480×800 pixels and 262,000 colors and allows for adjustments in the transition between menus, the backlight, font style, font size on the dial, and the format of the clock on the home screen.  The easy to use touch screen interface is fairly intuitive and can be calibrated to make it more responsive. The screen also offers a vibrating feedback and this can be adjusted, giving the facility to alter the length and intensity of the vibrations.  This device supports the Samsung Touch Wiz interface. This gives access to a collapsible toolbar and some very useful widgets like the easy one-touch access to social media groups.

The home screen features short-cut icons to the phone dial, contacts, and messaging and main menus.  The large numbers on the phone dial virtual keypad make it very easy to use.

When using the web browser feature or photo gallery, the Samsung Rogue features an internal accelerometer that changes the orientation of the screen according to the angle you hold the device.

With the Samsung Rogue, you are not restricted to using the virtual keyboard, because you will find a full keyboard (QWERTY four row) if you slide the phone cover to the right. This comprises good-sized keys that are slightly raised to enable easy typing for text messages.  A great feature is that you have separate number and letter keys. Also featured are navigation arrows, the usual shift and function keys and an OK button to navigate.  The complete screen changes to landscape mode when the keyboard is open.

The basic features of the Samsung Rogue include speaker, vibrate mode, a calculator and calendar, an alarm and world clocks, stopwatch and timer. In addition there is a phone book that allows 1000 entries of five phone numbers and two email addresses for each entry, as well as screen name for instant messages, street address, birth date and notes. Contacts can be saved in groups, caller ID can include a photo and you can also assign specific ring tones to callers.

You can read Office documents and PDF files on this device and it also features a GPS with  support for a VZ Navigator as well as quirky features like a sketch pad for doodling.  There is also wide Bluetooth support allowing hands free, file transfer and A2DP streaming.

Messaging Features
Using the Samsung Rogue, you can send text, voice, video and picture messages quickly and easily. There are three different email options, mobile email, corporate and Web mobile.  Mobile email allows you to use services like Yahoo, AOL or Windows Live from your mobile phone and the corporate feature allows you to link to your work email or calendar through a Remosync system.  There are, however, monthly subscriptions for these services.

Audio and video
With the easy to use audio player come many options like creating and editing playlists and purchasing and downloading music.  The interface for the player is efficient and simple to use.  The player supports  MP3, WMA as well as unprotected AAC and AAC+ formats.  There is an included search tool that allows you to search through your songs, but you can’t multitask if you have the music player active.  The video player can play H.264 encoded videos.

The full HTML Web browser enables trouble free browsing with smooth scrolling and transitions.  It has the added advantage of the zoom feature which is operated by using the camera zoom controls.  Scrolling is a bit slower in the more complex pages.

The Samsung  Rogue features a 3.0 megapixel camera with LED flash.  It also has a mirror for self-portraits. The eight resolutions and three quality settings allow for quality photography and the videos taken are good enough quality for sharing on the Internet.
